Standard Overview
IEC 60502-2 specifies the requirements for power cables with extruded insulation and rated voltages from 6 kV up to 30 kV. It mainly covers medium voltage (MV) power cables used for electrical distribution systems.
The standard applies to cables with copper or aluminum conductors, XLPE insulation, and various metallic screening and protective sheath designs. It defines requirements for cable construction, insulation performance, electrical characteristics, dimensions, and testing methods to ensure reliable operation in medium voltage networks.
Key Technical Requirements
Conductor: Copper or aluminum conductors complying with IEC 60228 requirements
Insulation: XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) insulation for medium voltage applications
Screening: Metallic conductor screen, insulation screen, copper tape screen, or copper wire screen
Armouring: Optional steel tape, steel wire, or aluminum wire armouring depending on installation requirements
Rated Voltage: 3.6/6kV up to 18/30kV (commonly 6/10kV, 8.7/15kV, 12/20kV, 18/30kV)
Testing: Electrical, mechanical, and routine tests to verify insulation integrity and cable performance
Applications
IEC 60502-2 compliant cables are widely used for:
Medium voltage distribution networks
Underground power transmission systems
Industrial power supply networks
Renewable energy projects such as wind and solar farms
Utility and infrastructure projects
