Standard Overview
IEC 60502-1 is an international standard that specifies requirements for power cables with extruded insulation and rated voltages from 1 kV up to 3 kV. It covers low voltage power cables with copper or aluminum conductors, including PVC and XLPE insulated cable designs for power distribution and industrial applications.
The standard defines requirements for cable construction, insulation materials, conductor specifications, dimensional characteristics, electrical performance, and testing methods to ensure safe and reliable operation.
Key Technical Requirements
Conductor: Copper or aluminum conductors complying with IEC 60228 requirements
Insulation: PVC, XLPE, or other thermoplastic insulation materials
Cable Construction: Single-core or multi-core designs with optional armouring and protective sheathing
Rated Voltage: Up to 1.8/3kV
Testing: Electrical, mechanical, and dimensional tests to verify cable performance and durability
Applications
IEC 60502-1 compliant cables are widely used for:
Low voltage power distribution networks
Industrial plants and manufacturing facilities
Commercial buildings and infrastructure projects
Underground power supply systems
Renewable energy and electrical installation projects
