IEC 61089 Overhead Electrical Stranded Conductors Standard
Standard Overview
IEC 61089 specifies requirements for round wire concentric lay stranded overhead electrical conductors used in overhead power transmission and distribution networks. The standard covers conductors made from aluminum, aluminum alloy, and combinations of aluminum and steel wires, defining their construction, dimensions, mechanical properties, and electrical characteristics.
IEC 61089 is widely applied to bare overhead conductors, including AAC (All Aluminium Conductor), AAAC (All Aluminium Alloy Conductor), and ACSR (Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced), which are commonly used for overhead power lines.
Key Technical Requirements
Conductor Type: Round wire concentric stranded overhead conductors
Materials:
Hard-drawn aluminum wires
Aluminum alloy wires
Galvanized steel core wires (for ACSR)
Construction: Multiple layers of stranded wires with specified lay ratios and conductor dimensions
Electrical Performance: Defined resistance values and current-carrying capacity requirements
Mechanical Performance: Tensile strength and elongation requirements according to conductor type
Quality Requirements: Dimensional inspection, electrical resistance testing, and mechanical tests
Applications
IEC 61089 compliant conductors are widely used for:
Overhead transmission lines
Medium and high voltage distribution networks
Utility power grid projects
Rural electrification systems
Renewable energy power transmission projects
